Listen. Clarify.
Work Together.
This week, success means understanding instructions, checking meaning and helping a partner complete a task.
sequence • key words • action
clarify • instruct • confirm
Perfect Learning Environment
1. Can You Follow It?
Stand up. Follow only the instructions you hear. Do not copy your classmates.
Simple classroom actions
Two- and three-step instructions
Stand up. Look at the board. Point to the door. Sit down. Now stand up, touch your desk and raise your left hand. Next, turn to a partner, say “Good morning,” and sit down again.
2. Listening Strategy • ACTION
When instructions are long, listen for what you must do.
circle, open, move, write
the card, your notebook
first, then, finally
What are we supposed to do?
3. Listening • The Confusing Teacher
First listening: What is the class trying to do?
Teacher: Right, everyone. Work in groups of three. First, take the six picture cards from the envelope and put them face up on the desk. Don't write anything yet. Next, choose the three pictures that show good study habits.
Student 1: Sorry, do you mean we choose three pictures before we write?
Teacher: Exactly. After that, put the three pictures in order from most useful to least useful. Then write one reason for each choice.
Student 2: So, first we choose three, then we put them in order, right?
Teacher: That's right. Finally, choose one person to explain your group's number-one study habit to the class.
4. Listen Again • Put It in Order
Number the actions 1–5.
5. Communication Repair
Strong speakers do not pretend to understand. They repair communication.
Could you repeat that, please?
Do you mean …?
What are we supposed to do?
So, first we …, right?
6. Which Repair Phrase?
Choose the best response.
7. Build It! • Information Gap
Partner A sees a layout. Partner B must reproduce it without seeing it.
Give clear instructions. You may not point at Partner B's paper.
Do not look at A's layout. Ask clarification questions whenever necessary.
8. Switch Roles • Level Up
Now Partner B instructs. This time, use at least two repair phrases.
9. Listening • Classroom Problem
Listen to two students. What is the problem, and what solution do they agree on?
Alex: It's difficult to concentrate during group work. Everyone starts talking at the same time.
Maya: I know. But I don't think silent group work makes sense.
Alex: True. What if each group chooses one discussion leader?
Maya: Good idea. The leader can make sure everyone gets a turn. We could also keep our voices low.
Alex: Agreed. Let's suggest both ideas.
10. Final Challenge • Perfect Learning Environment
In groups, agree on five rules that improve learning — not rules just for control.
“We think students should / must … because … .”
“This rule helps learning because … .”
11. Group Presentation
Prepare a 60–90 second presentation. Everyone must speak.
