1. Reading is a Strategy
Good readers do not read every text in the same way.
Use the title and clues.
Read quickly for the big picture.
Search for a specific detail.
Combine clues with what you know.
2. Predict • A School with No Bells
Do not read the text yet. What might be different?
3. Skim • 60-Second Challenge
Read quickly. Choose the main idea.
At Riverside School, the day does not begin with a loud bell. Students arrive between 8:15 and 8:30 and check a digital board for the morning plan. At 8:30, they meet their class mentor for ten minutes. The mentor answers questions and reminds everyone about important activities.
Lessons are organised in longer learning blocks. Students still study subjects such as English, science and mathematics, but they sometimes work on projects that connect two subjects. Between lessons, students check the time themselves. They are expected to arrive at the next room on time without a bell telling them to move.
Responsibility is an important part of school life. Students keep shared areas tidy, return equipment after using it and help organise school events. They can also suggest new clubs at monthly student meetings. However, freedom does not mean there are no rules. Phones must stay away during lessons, and everyone has to respect quiet study areas.
At first, new students sometimes worry about managing their time. Most soon create routines and become more independent. Teachers say the system works because students learn that being trusted also means being responsible.
